7/8/2023 0 Comments Quiet american book![]() ![]() Couched in a tale of romance and friendship, The Quiet American is a political parable, an assured explanation of history but also a warning to take heed in the future. What is underscored emphatically in the novel is that the act of writing is a political one. This is an emblematic, imperialistic love triangle the struggle for the woman is meant to represent the struggle for Vietnam. ![]() I took no action-even an opinion is a kind of action." Between Fowler and Pyle comes the young Vietnamese woman, Phuong. By the end of the novel, we learn that Pyle's American optimism has been his undoing but equally dangerous is Fowler's feigned journalistic distance - "I preferred the title of reporter. ![]() The novel is written from the point of view of a jaded British foreign correspondent and Saigon resident, Thomas Fowler and chronicles his relationship with American diplomat, Alden Pyle, who arrives in Vietnam full of the idealism of democracy, intent on teaching a foreign nation a better way of doing things that is, the American way. I never knew a man who had better motives for all the trouble he caused, Graham Greenes narrator Fowler remarks of Alden Pyle, the eponymous Quiet American. ![]() The novel - set in 1950s Vietnam, is carefully balanced by the weight of the authority of an author who worked as a correspondent in Vietnam between 1951-1954. It marks Graham Greene as one of the greatest journalists of his generation. The Quiet American is an important novel essentially, it is a love story but it is also a scathing critique of US meddling in the internal affairs of nations and people it knows nothing about. ![]() ![]() You do not need artistic skills, just photocopy or trace the motifs, pictures and patterns, then transfer them on to your project pieces. Violence is typical in fantasy novels a few stabbings are the main violence in this book. The violence is a lot, but I wouldn't describe it as "graphic" or "frightening", especially for older teens. This book has some great romance, no sex, just some passionate kisses. Even the main protagonist, Jude, is not necessarily "good". The faeries in this book are manipulative, greedy, deceiving, and some are straight up murderers. This book is full of faeries, but these are not your typical sing-song happy-go-lucky faeries with pixie wings and a little magic. It was very clean, which is actually quite hard to find in a Young Adult fantasy book these days. I am a huge fan of darker fantasy and so this book blessed my life with its gothic vibes. We need the oscillation between the two types of thinking. I hate to use leisure to promote productivity, but it's true, If we take time to recharge, when we work, we work better. You need the downtime when your mind is wandering - whether it's going for a walk or not doing anything at all. That second kind isn't valued in the U.S., but what we're discovering is you need both to get to a new idea, a creative thought.
